When is the Center Going to Open Up?

This is the number one question staff are getting from people these days. “June, we hope,” answered Brice Mercer, the Center’s operations manager.

By June the center will be in a ‘transitional’ phase, with some new virtual programming and limited in-house services following CDC guidelines. “Of course, this is all subject to change based on the pandemic. We could open earlier, or things could be delayed if there is another wave.”

And when it opens, people will notice some changes to programming and services. Mercer and the executive team are leading a strategic planning process to reenergize what is offered through the Redmond Senior Center. She defines programming as activities, such as having meals together, enjoying classes, and attending events. Services are defined as providing for a need, such as foot clinics for diabetics.

“We’re finalizing plans to reinvigorate Community Education classes,” said Maureen Dooley, a board member who is also working on the planning. “We’re focused on topics for older adults and caregivers, but also what will interest the community at large.”

“The Senior Center is the hub for resources for older adults in the greater Redmond area so it only makes sense that we take the lead on creating a centralized source of up-to-date information about what’s going on. Supported by partner agencies such as COCC and Redmond Parks and Recreation, we’re seeking to provide information, resources, and connections to services and events throughout Central Oregon.”

“Our goal, again depending on circumstances, is a full opening in January 2022,” concluded Mercer. “In the meantime, check out some activities happening in the community this spring.”
